Your personal settings include contact information and other settings that will help your instructor and peers contact and identify you. You can add extra contact addresses (including e-mail and text messaging) and add a profile picture. Profile pictures are helpful to identify users by putting a name with a face. Please keep in mind that your profile picture is visible to all students within your current course(s). Your contact information (including any private e-mail addresses and phone numbers) are only visible by you--neither your classmates or instructors can see this information.

We also allow you to update your name in Canvas, if you don't go by your legal name and want  your appropriate name listed. If you update your name as it appears in Canvas, please let your instructor know--your instructors must submit grades based on your legal name, and will need to make sure they're submitting for the appropriate student. You can also select your pronouns in Canvas Links to an external site. to communicate your appropriate pronouns to your peers and instructors. Canvas has created this field as a dropdown box, but our college controls what is listed within the dropdown box. We worked with our transgender and nonbinary community to develop the list provided, but recognize that a dropdown box is an inherent limitation to gender expression. Your pronouns are valid regardless of whether they are present on this list, and we will be updating this list as we continue to receive feedback and make adjustments. How do I add a profile picture in my user account?

You can add and change profile pictures in your Canvas account, here's how:

  • Upload a Picture from your computer
  • Take a Picture using your computer's camera (not supported when using Safari or Internet Explorer)

Tips for profile pictures:

  • Please choose an appropriate picture to represent yourself in a classroom setting. Images that do not follow the guidelines may be deleted at the discretion of a system administrator.
  • Images should be square in size to prevent your picture from being resized or distorted.
  • It should be a minimum of 500 x 500 pixels in dimensions.
  • The image must be in jpg or png.
